Greenscroll Strives to Green Web Surfing

by Nino Marchetti, August 20th, 2009

Ever give thought to how much electricity goes into the maintaining of your Web site, if you have one as a family member or blogger? There’s an implied notion that there’s a lot – that which powers the computer you use to access your site, the power others use to visit your site from other computers, the computer (server) which your site resides on, and so on. A non-profit out of Canada called Greenscroll hopes they can offset at least part of that by letting you “virtually reduce the environmental footprint of your website to zero.”

The idea behind Greenscroll is relatively simple – you determine how many page views your site gets per month and pledge to donate a set amount determined by Greenscroll to them. They then take the cash, on your behalf, and invest it into “green renewable energy projects,” such as wind energy and solar power. The idea then is that the money you donate helps to put renewable energy back onto the grid, balancing out that which is expended to visit your site. It is an interesting idea, but we have to wonder how much traction it will gain.
