We’ve seen some different types of software of late, for different platforms such as the PC or iPhone, which let you go green. These include your printing habits, turning down the power when you exit the room and providing personalized energy savings recommendations. Now comes some software from Little Green Genie which determines how much carbon you are using while computing and how much it will cost you to offset that usage.
The Little Green Genie software installs on PCs or Macs and prompts you for information on your computer as well as where you live. It then uses data on your computer’s power usage as well as data on how clean the energy is in your country to recommend a preset amount for you to spend on carbon offsets. As you use your computer, say the developers, the software automatically reduces your pre-purchased carbon credit. It is estimated, for example, that “a standard desktop computer with a 15” monitor that is used 2 hours a day will use about USD $7 of credit a year.” It isn’t that bad of an investment when you think about it, but we will have to give the software a test run like we did Microsoft Hohm before we can give it a full thumbs up.
