Doing Energy Savings via Consumer Reports

by Nino Marchetti, September 10th, 2009

If you’re like us, we are always at least thinking about ways we can save energy and lower our montly bills at the same time. Consumers Union, the folks behind Consumer Reports, have a new feature story out in the latest issue of the magazine which offers some ways to cut your energy costs by $1,500, including a few which have you considering some simple green technology focused changes.

In its October 2008 feature story, Consumer Reports covers four strategies consumers can do to get their energy costs down, with associated ideas list with each strategy. The ideas we particular like include a programmable thermostat for heating and cooling, and, for electricity savings, thinking about making use of compact fluorescent light bulbs as well as upgrading your old refrigerators and dishwashers to new Energy Star friendly models. An upcoming stimulus, in the form of rebates up to $200 from the government, will hopefully motivate more people to turn in those old appliances.
