Getting Your Amplifier to Go Green Tech

by Nino Marchetti, September 11th, 2009

Amplifiers, designed to boost the audio signal put out by an audio source to speakers, They usually attach to multiple speakers at the same time and are often at full power for all connections regardless if anything is attached, sucking down a lot of electricity in the process. This class of device is one which definitely could use a green technology makeover, and one company trying to do this is Knoll Systems.

Knoll Systems currently has on the market its Eco-System 8 Channel 50 Watt Energy Saving Distribution Amplifier. This amp is similar to most in the market, sporting eight stereo channel (four pairs) of connectors for speakers. How it differs, according to the manufacturer, is that it has special circuitry said to detect which of the channels are actually in use. Only those in use have the powered audio sent to them, while the other channels stay powered down. Knoll claims its amplifier also uses under 5 watts while idling, compared to more standard amps which use upwards of 65 watts when in the same mode.
