On Making an El Camino an All Electric Auto
People who tinker love to take almost anything and make it something else. Like turning a one time big gas guzzler into a zero emissions electric vehicle, for example. Such is the case with one Tom Leitschuh, a guy from Wisconsin who recently dropped around $30,000 to transform 1981 Chevy El Camino. That’s right – an El Camino.
Leitschuh, according to Wired, got the conversion task done in about six weeks, including using some parts donated from a company as well as a few extra hands to help with the project. The bulk of the cost, and most likely the labor, went towards purchasing and installing the close to 46 batteries to power this beast. The owner told Wired he thinks he can top 85 MPH in th El Camino and get a range somewhere over 100 miles per charge. Pretty good for a conversion of a classic American car, if you do ask us.
