Vers Wood iPod/iPhone Cases: Renewable Beauty

by Nino Marchetti, September 21st, 2009

A typical case made today for an Apple iPhone or iPod, regardless of its form or function, does not come from renewable sources. The plastics of these cases do nothing for the environment and typically cost a lot of C02 emissions to make. Natural materials, such as wood, are a solid alternative, but only provided the manufacturer does what it can to contribute to the renewal of that resource. Such is the case with Sprout Creation and its recently unveiled line of Vers wood cases.

The Sprout Vers wood cases are designed from renewable cherry, walnut and bamboo. Sprout says that, for each tree used in Vers case production, 100 are re-planted through the company’s relationships with the Arbor Day Foundation and the U.S. Forestry Service. These trees, according to the company, re-forest park lands damaged by fire and other natural disasters. This may not be something everyone considers eco-friendly in the end – trading off the life of one tree for a consumer product in exchange for the planting of a group of other trees – but for those wanting to enjoy the natural design of these cases, it is a positive trade off.

Sprout says the bamboo cases, in particular, are extremely environmentally friendly. The wood – grass, they call it – is harvested by hand, which is said to cut down on carbon emissions generated by more industrious ways of harvesting lumber. Some of what Sprout says of its Vers cases is borderline eco-spin, but the wood and bamboo used to build these products seemingly comes off as a very durable design in line with that of plastic counterparts.

Features of these handcrafted Vers cases include unique looks based upon the wood’s character, steel-pin reinforced corners, a soft lining and a rear side quick eject finger detail. Cases for the larger iPods and iPhone cost around $40, while the nano case prices around $35.
