The idea of green mobile phones – those which have thought put into them during the whole life cycle of the product about what they are made from and how they will be reused afterwards – continues to gain traction among consumers, at least if another new research report, this time from ABI Research, is to be believed. ABI says it found nearly “half” of American consumers would choose a green handset if the price was right.
ABI’s survey of 1,000 adult mobile phone users found that 47 percent of those asked would pay for such a device if at least “price, features, and performance were equal.” ABI says though it is tough for handset manufacturers to truly develop what could be really considered a green mobile, given they would probably have to revamp their supply chain and retool the production process in order to create a phone made from recyclable or renewed materials. It is felt that the percentage of properly recycled handsets – those which aren’t just tossed into landfill by consumers after usage – will grow as well from 8% in 2009 to 17% in 2014. This will require education though of consumers on these issues – reportedly only four percent said they understood what a green cell phone really is.

[...] Mobile phones, as a form of e-waste, can take up a lot of landfill given the huge volume of units on the planet. Recycling them is certainly a way to go, but how motivated are individual consumers to do so? Very motivated – provided the price is right, according to a summary of some research findings from an ABI Research piece first published in October. [...]
