“A new source for independent, third-party green claims validation” has certified its first green electronics and appliances, it was announced today. This certification is from Underwriters Laboratories and the electronics manufacturer being certified for a LCD television and clothes washer is LG Electronics.
UL Environment, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Underwriters Laboratories which does the certification and was launched in January, adds a new green standards evaluator into a field already populated with the likes of Energy Star and EPEAT. The green claims on the LG SteamWasher WM3001HWA and 47LH90 LCD TV were verified through UL Environment via evaluations “based on energy and water savings” for the clothes washer and “overall energy consumption – both in on mode power and standby modes” for the television.

LG earned the right, through these certifications, to slap “the UL Environment service logo on product packaging and marketing materials.” The company now plans to expand its participation in the UL program by submitting other products to have their green claims tested. For UL’s part, it feels that its “validation program brings a new level of confidence to consumers to make informed purchase decisions when shopping for energy efficient products.”
