Sure, the concept of the bio-battery has been around for a long time. (Anyone out there remember the Potato Clock from science project days?) But a new concept design that comes to us via Treehugger has to be counted as a stroke of sheer brilliance: the cell phone that runs on Coke (or any other sugary water.)
Running low on battery? Simply pour your carbonated (or non-carbonated) sugar-water of choice into the chamber at the top of the Nokia ‘green’ phone. Eco-friendly electricity is generated from carbohydrates (a.k.a., sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. As the phone uses power, it has two by-products: water and oxygen. A whole lot more eco than, say, the conventional lithium batteries currently being gobbled up and spit out by cell-phones everywhere, not to mention the coal-fired electricity we currently use to charge them.

According to designer Daizi Zheng, the bio-battery used by this phone has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional cell-phone batteries, and would be fully degradable. Kinda makes you want to buy the world a Coke…
