Plant Mate Concept Tells Your Mobile When Plant Is Not Happy

by Susan DeFreitas, March 6th, 2010

It wasn’t long ago we covered a crazy little pot for your houseplants that hooks up to your computer via a USB connection. Now, yet another high-tech gadget developed to help us keep plants alive–the Plant Mate concept from Tom Dooley, Mansour Ourasanah, and Mathieu Turpault.

According to Greenlaunches, Plant Mates are a kind of green spike-things that can be planted in your garden, where they’ll automatically relay information vital to your plant’s health–such as the soil’s moisture and nutrient levels, its exposure to the sun and average temps–directly to your smartphone. The Plant Mate operates on solar energy and utilizes existing smartphone technology.

While at first glance, this gizmo may seem like yet another waste of computational energy to accomplish the most basic of tasks–and certainly won’t take the place of hard-won gardening know-how–the Plant Mate seems like a great time-saver for the novice and veteran gardener alike.
