Can One Rechargeable Battery Fit All Sizes?

by Susan DeFreitas, May 18th, 2010

We see plenty of unusual green concepts here at EarthTechling, and this one is definitely interesting: a rechargeable, one-size-fits-all battery. It’s called the A to D Rechargeable Battery (which comes to us via Gajitz) and it works in any battery socket, from AA (as its handle indicates) to D.

This feat is made possible by a body made of memory foam. When you run out of batteries, simply squeeze the A to D until it’s small enough to fit the area for the specified battery, then pop it in. The A to D will expand until it fits and connect via positive and anode terminals, just like a regular battery, providing power via an internal nickel hydroxide battery equivalent in power to a AA.

There’s nothing more frustrating than searching in vain for the right-sized battery when you really need it.  While this seems like a great green idea as far as rechargeable batteries go, can this innovative gadget deliver enough juice to power electronics with D batteries? We’ll see…
