It might not look like much, but this DIY solar car from Pakistan is showing some promise. The Solaron, designed by Farrukh Khan at the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore. Built from bicycle parts, the Solaron is propelled by a 12-volt battery and a 24-volt motor, and can reach a top speed of 20 miles per hour. The solar canopy doubles as an awning for the driver, as there's not much protection from the elements on this prototype. The whole project cost under $600, and Khan was even nice enough to post instructions in case you want to try it yourself.
