OK, so this might not be a viable option for people living anywhere but India, but for those in India, particularly those without steady power, the MittiCool clay refrigerator is pretty, well, cool. It's made of insulating clay, keeping food inside cool and fresh without any electrical power whatsoever. Instead, about 10 liters of water are stored in the upper compartment, keeping the temperature about 20 degrees (Celsius) cooler than the outside temperature. According to The Weekend Leader, about 5,000 of these have been sold for 2,500 rupees, or $47.50. While it might not store food for as long as an electric fridge, this kind of storage might gain popularity across the globe in different forms as it allows those without power to store fresh fruits and vegetables longer than when kept at room temperature.
