Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., was doing all right with its existing 525-kilowatt photovoltaic power system at Patriot Place, the shopping center adjacent to the stadium. But then along came NRG – along with its partner The Kraft Group – saying, hey, why not go one better? Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL New England Patriots, is in the process of nearly tripling the amount of solar power generated at Patriot Place with a custom-designed, 1-megawatt solar power installation expected to provide up to 60 percent of the shopping center's power, reducing its carbon emissions by more than 800 metric tons. This new, beefed up solar power system will consist of a combination of standard and translucent solar panels that will partially cover Patriot Place’s outdoor walkways, generating power while providing shade and cover for visitors year round. Additional rooftop panels will kick out more juice, bringing the expected annual output of the new system to 1.1 million kilowatt-hours. Patriot Place also boasts green features such as a white, reflective roof; low-VOC paints, sealants and adhesives; energy efficient lights; and Energy Star qualified equipment and appliances. During construction, all materials from excavation and regrading were reused on site as fill.
